College Life and Christianity

Recently, it has been announced that Duke University is now allowing the Muslim call to prayer to be broadcast on campus.  Yet, Duke is not the only campus in the US to do so.  Others such as UCLA have already been doing this for quite some time and their Islamic Student Association is allowed to meet for prayers in one of the University’s Centers.

In contrast, Christian groups are being derecognized by many Universities all over the US.  Therefore, in many cases, they have no free access to campus facilities in order for them to meet, study, worship and pray.  Many Universities are attempting to force Christian groups into allowing non-Christians to become members as well as leaders of their associations or pay the penalty of being derecognized by the University or banned entirely in some instances.

How unfortunate it is that this Muslim call to prayer is being allowed on college campuses since this is where so many young minds and hearts are molded and permanently shaped for life.  Most young adults these days have been raised in a world where the only exposure to Christianity has been from television that normally depicts Christians as hate filled freaks and idiots.  Next, deliver them up to today’s college campuses and these young souls can be permanently lost to the overpowering charisma of the leftist politically correct agenda where Christianity and Christians become the enemy and Islam is embraced as good and ethical.

The world seems to be turning upside down.  A religion that tells its followers to love your neighbors as yourselves is declared to be hate filled.  A religion that calls for bloodshed against all who disagree with them is embraced and applauded.  Concessions are made for Islamic students to broadcast, for all to hear, their cries of worship.  Yet, Christian students are persecuted every day for their acts of faith.  They must keep their mouths shut, their opinions to themselves.  They must not broadcast their faith for fear of reprisals.  Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter (Isaiah 5:20)!

Should Christians give up and give in?  Should we just lay down and let the aggressiveness of the left defeat us?  Should we be relegated to worshipping in secret?  Should we stop evangelizing so as not to offend any other group such as the Muslim community?  As Christians, we are called to be ambassadors for God.  We are to proclaim His message of salvation to as many as possible before it is too late.  I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine (2 Timothy 4:1-2).  We must do this to help save these young minds before they become so totally immersed in the philosophy of this present world that they can no longer think for themselves.  We must do this before the campus culture of the left fills their minds with fiction and fables regarding Christianity.  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry (2 Timothy 4:3-5).

But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,  Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution (2 Timothy 3:10-12).  Discrimination and persecution is not a new occurrence when it comes to Christian evangelizing.  The Bible describes some of Paul the Apostle’s persecution in the book of Timothy.  Yet through all of his afflictions, he never gave up.  He said to Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life...(1 Timothy 6:12).  Even though all was against him at times, he endured the suffering because he wanted all to hear the life saving message of Jesus.  At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen (2 Timothy 4:16-18).

Paul wasn’t worrying about the here and now.  He was looking ahead to a much greater reward awaiting him.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing (2 Timothy 4:7-8).

Even though the world will always be against us, we must never fail to proclaim the message of Jesus Christ to all.  Evangelizing for Christ, especially on college campuses, will increasingly become more and more difficult as we approach His soon coming again.  This should be of no surprise since the Devil knows that his time is short and is making a last ditch effort to win the hearts and minds of all that he can.  Therefore, continue to fight the good fight and proudly continue to proclaim to all that Jesus is Lord.
