Netanyahu and the US Congress

Is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attempting to pit U.S. political party against U.S. political party by addressing Congress behind the President’s back?  Possibly.  Is it necessarily a bad thing?  According to the reporting of Fox’s Chris Wallace and The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg, “yes” would be the answer.  Yet, are they correct in their assessments?

What if Netanyahu is correct in his assessment of the Iranian threat?  What happens when and if Iran actually possesses nuclear weapons?  If he believes without a shadow of a doubt that his tiny nation is in grave danger of being wiped off of the map by an eminent attack, would going to the extreme of side-stepping a president, who will not even acknowledge that Islamic extremism exists as a threat, be such a bad thing?  Of course not.

It is quite possible that Netanyahu may be one of only a few that has had the guts to challenge our President to wake up and wipe the fog from his blind eyes.  Since Obama refuses to do so and is sinking further and further into this dark pit of sensitivity for radical Islamists, Netanyahu’s only recourse is to make his appeals directly to Congress.

The real problem with this is, however, Obama has been the real and actual threat to bipartisanship.  Sidestepping the decisions of US lawmakers in order to fulfill his own agendas has been the hallmark of his Presidency.  If, in fact, Netanyahu’s appeals to Congress actually fall on listening ears, would the President then in turn listen.  Not likely.  A swift veto of any proposal would be dealt out as punishment for his insolent actions.

Sadly, it seems that whatever Netanyahu does, it will only turn out to be wrong.  Wrong in the eyes of the leaders of his nation for further alienating Israel from US support.  Wrong in the eyes of America’s news media.  Even conservatives are beginning to question his actions and motives.  Whatever good intentions he has in going directly to Congress, it will be ultimately turned against him in the end.

The Bible says that in the coming end times wars against Israel that no one will come to help.  They will merely look on with concern.  Unfortunately for Bibi and Israel, US attitudes and sympathies are heading in that direction at a fast pace.  In the coming wars, God will be the only one that will step in and rescue this tiny nation from annihilation.
